ArmInfo. The Spanish Congress of Deputies (lower house of parliament) approved the proposal put forward by faction EH Bildu, on sending humanitarian aid to Nagorno-Karabakh and the suspension of arms sales to Azerbaijan.
According to the decision, published on the Facebook address of the Armenian Embassy in Spain, the document contains an appeal to international organizations with a request to actively participate in the search for a way out of the Karabakh conflict. 19 people voted for the decision, 10 against and 5 abstentions.
Deputy and author of the proposal John Inarritu stressed the relevance of providing humanitarian assistance to refugee families and the importance of preserving active position in international organizations so that the Artsakh issue appears on the international humanitarian agenda.
John Inarritu was recently part of an observer delegation made up of parliamentarians and journalists from across the European Union. The MP personally got acquainted with the situation in Armenia and the Republic of Artsakh and was able to assess on the spot the damage caused by the aggression of Azerbaijan and Turkey. Inarritu asks the international community to participate in the search for a peaceful negotiated settlement to prevent an escalation of the humanitarian crisis. "Taking into account the risk of genocide and ethnic cleansing, which they intend to carry out against the Armenian people in Nagorno-Karabakh, the world cannot look the other way," he said.
The initiative, approved on November 16, requires the Spanish government to temporarily suspend the export of weapons and the sale of military equipment dual use to Azerbaijan. According to John Inarritu, the requirement that the Spanish state, while the conflict lasts in Nagorno-Karabakh, did not export weapons, is the minimum required.
"Azerbaijan and Turkey have used prohibited weapons such as cluster bombs and white phosphorus. Numerous agencies have reported and on war crimes committed by Azerbaijan - executions of prisoners of war and captured civilians, mutilation of bodies and beheading, "the deputy noted.
