ArmInfo. The World Monuments Fund (WMF) considers the deliberate destruction of cultural heritage of any kind as unacceptable. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of the Republic of Armenia, referring to the WMF statement made after the news that the Surb Amenaprkich Ghazanchetsots Cathedral in the city of Shushi was damaged as a result of military operations in Nagorno-Karabakh.
This temple was built in the 19th century and then rebuilt in the 1990s after the war, after which it became a symbol of the region's revival.
"Through our activities around the world, we have witnessed that the destruction of cultural heritage, both from the point of view of local communities and from the point of view of world history, is an irreversible loss, since it forever severs our ties with the past, inflicting wounds on the identity of peoples." says the message.
In this regard, the Foundation called on the parties to show restraint and refrain from any military action in cultural heritage sites. "The World Monuments Fund is committed to its mission to preserve our common history around the world through collaboration with all communities," the source said. Recall that as a result of the hostilities unleashed by Azerbaijan with the full support of Turkey on September 27 in Nagorno-Karabakh, and continuing to this day, the Cathedral of Surb Amenaprkich Ghazanchetsots (Cathedral of St. Christ the Savior) in the city of Shushi in Nagorno-Karabakh was twice struck. Note that the architectural complex consisted of a church (1868-1887) and a bell tower (1858).
