ArmInfo.Tomorrow, from 11:10 am to 11:40 am, parliament will hold a secret ballot on the election of judges to the Constitutional Court. Chairman of the Counting Commission Vahagn Hovakimyan announced this. In order for a candidate to be elected, it is necessary to provide 3/5 of the parliamentary votes. "Each MP will be given 3 ballots with the names of candidates," Hovakimyan specified.
Meanwhile, in the parliament, which devoted the whole day to hearings of candidates for membership in the Constitutional Court, heated debates flared up around the candidacy of Edgar Shatiryan. Thus, an independent MP of the Armenian parliament Arman Babajanyan criticized the candidacy presented by the government.
From the rostrum of the parliament, the MP noted that "Shatiryan is a spineless person who is ready to serve any government." According to Babajanyan, such a person cannot hold the office of a judge of the Constitutional Court. The MP connected Shatiryan with representatives of the previous government.
In turn, Deputy Speaker of the Parliament Alen Simonyan did not agree with this opinion. The Deputy Speaker said that Shatiryan is a rare specialist. "A lot of people who live in Armenia worked with the previous authorities. Instead of Edgar Shatiryan, you can name the name of any other person, for example, a teacher from some region. Without knowing a person, his deeds and actions, one cannot denigrate him. Shatiryan is a rare specialist, there are very few such specialists in our country. And I am glad that today we are discussing exactly his candidacy for the position of judge of the Constitutional Court, I hope that all my colleagues will vote , Simonyan concluded.
To note, the National Assembly of Armenia adopted amendments to the law "On the Constitutional Court" on June 30. In accordance with them, the powers of all judges of the Constitutional Court are limited to 12 years. After the adoption of the amendments, three judges who had served for over 12 years were dismissed from their posts. New judges will be elected instead. One candidate is proposed by the Government, the second - by the President, and the third - by the General Assembly of Judges. General Assembly of Judges nominated Yervand Khundkaryan, the Government -Edgar Shatiryan, and the President -Artur Vagharshyan.
