ArmInfo. Third President of Armenia, Serzh Sargsyan, revealed some details of the reaching a ceasefire in Moscow in April 2016. During the press conference, the third President said that then Chief of the General Staff of the Armenian Armed Forces, Yuri Khachaturov, at that time told Sargsyan that his Russian counterpart called him and said that the Azerbaijanis were ready to meet and discuss a ceasefire.
"Khachaturov offered to meet in Tbilisi, as it is close to Armenia, and in case of resumption of hostilities, the Chief of General Staff may return quickly. However, the Azerbaijani side insisted on a meeting in Moscow. The fact is that any agreement needs guarantees from mediators," Sargsyan stressed.
The third president said that a meeting was held in Moscow on April 5, in which Yuri Khachaturov took part. "Initially, we agreed that our maximum goal was to return Azerbaijan to its original positions. They stated that after so many losses, they simply could not justify a return to their original positions. But we have achieved another goal. The 1994 ceasefire remained in force, a new agreement was not signed," Sargsyan noted.
