ArmInfo. The opposition considers any actions of the parliamentary majority aimed at reforms in the judicial system as illegal steps. This opinion was expressed to journalists by head of the "My Step" parliamentary faction, Lilit Makunts, after a majority in the National Assembly voted for constitutional amendments aimed at reforming the Constitutional Court.
According to her, when the authorities proposed a constitutional referendum, the opposition's responses were the same. <Then the opposition noted that the best option would be to discuss this issue in parliament without putting it to a referendum. Today they say the opposite. I would be very glad that those representatives of the opposition who once expressed this point of view, today attended the meeting and vote>, said Makunts.
Regarding the accusations that in this way the authorities carry out a constitutional coup, Makunts said: <The powers, which the MPs of the parliament have the right to exercise, are clearly fixed in the Constitution, legislation and the regulations of the National Assembly. Outside of these powers, we are not taking any actions>, the MP concluded.
It should be noted that the Armenian parliament in the first reading adopted the draft amendments to the Armenian Constitution. According to the amendments, the powers of judges of the Constitutional Court, who have been in office for more than 12 years, must be terminated. After the vacant posts of judges are taken, the election of a new head of the Constitutional Court will take place. Tonight, parliament should adopt the document in the second and final reading.
