ArmInfo. Many women in Armenia are not aware of their rights. On May 12, Naira Zohrabyan, an MP from the Prosperous Armenia faction, stated this from the rostrum of the parliament.
The MP noted that if the situation was different, there would be no need to adopt the law "On Domestic Violence". According to Zohrabyan, this is a very sad fact, but the reality is that. <Many women turned to me. The husband of one of them extinguished cigarettes on her, but she was afraid to contact the police, given the mentality of the environment of the place where she lived. Another woman, who came to me, was beaten by her husband on a daily basis. After we were able to rescue her from this hell, her mother called me and asked why I interfere into the affairs of someone else's family. Such women should be explained their rights, that they should not suffer so much that they have the same rights as men>, the lawmaker emphasized.
Zohrabyan stated that there is a problem of thinking. <Women's thinking should be changed. After the adoption of the law "On Domestic Violence", I asked how many women went to the police, there were very few of them. We expected more. We need to raise all possible problems, explain to women their rights, otherwise it is impossible. I think that we should also reform the law "On Domestic Violence" in order to prevent such cases, "she said.
According to the latest official statistics, in Armenia over 10 months of last year, 2756 cases of domestic violence were registered, women amounted to only 10% among 1760 violators registered.
