Tavitian's death is a loss for all of us. He is one of the significant and prominent figures of the modern Armenian Diaspora and the Armenian community of the United States, known not only as a talented scientist and businessman, but also as a generous philanthropist.
His long-term support, especially to Armenia, deserves great praise and gratitude. During the years of independence of Armenia, about three hundred civil servants and representatives of civil society have been trained at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University in Massachusetts. Aso Tavitian lived a meaningful and eventful life. His past path and high values are exemplary for our society, especially for the younger generation. "
Armenian President Armen Sarkissian also sent condolences, who emphasized that he was deeply saddened by the death of Aso Tavitian, president of the Tavitian Foundation, philanthropist and friend.
"Aso Tavitian was a unique bridge between the homeland and the Diaspora. He was not born in Armenia, he did not lived with Armenia in his heart, but he always lived in Armenia, visited it many times and supported the Motherland in every possible way.
For him, as a benefactor, the priority was the vision of a progressive and developed Armenia, which he realized by financing various projects, especially educational programs. Thanks to the Tavitian Foundation, many young Armenians studied or retrained at prestigious American universities, in particular at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University.
During our many meetings, including at various prestigious international platforms, Aso Tavitian always spoke about the need to support the Motherland and its people in every possible way, believing that the Motherland and the Diaspora are one body and one person, "the condolence message reads.
Armenian Foreign Minister Zohrab Mnatsakanyan, Deputy Prime Minister Tigran Avinyan, third President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan and a number of other political figures expressed their condolences on the death of Tavitian.
Aso Tavitian was born in Bulgaria in a family of Armenians who escaped from the Genocide. In 1959, he moved to Beirut, and then to the United States, where he received a master's degree in nuclear energy from Columbia University. Tavitian is an honorary doctor of the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University (USA) and the founder of one of the first and most successful software development companies (Syncsort) in the USA.
With the support of the Tavitian Foundation, founded by a philanthropist, about 350 young Armenians continued their education at the Fletcher School, for many years the fund also provides scholarships for education to Armenian students in advanced US universities, as well as finances special projects aimed at developing Armenia. With Tavitian's support, the "Armenian Church in the 21st Century" program began in the Holy See of Etchmiadzin.
