ArmInfo. Andrea Wiktorin, Head of the EU delegation to Armenia, made a video address in which she touched on the climate problem.
Thus, in her address, Wiktorin in particular said: "Climate change is one of the most important challenges for mankind today. The European Union has developed an ambitious project in this direction. Namely, by 2050 we want to become the first continent without carbon dioxide. And we want so that our neighbors participate in this initiative. Armenia also participates. Within the framework of the Eastern Partnership program, we together promote programs aimed at protecting, developing and restoring the environment. We work closely in within the framework of our main toolkit "Covenant of Mayors." And I am proud that 25 Armenian municipalities are participating in this project, which enables local governments to take steps in the direction of climate and take energy efficiency actions. At the same time, the European diplomat noted that the main task of the EU is the implementation of the Green Agreement project. We expect, Wiktorin continued, that there will be opportunities to implement as many projects as possible with Armenia. Earlier, the European Commission introduced the so-called "Green Agreement" (European Green Deal) - an action plan aimed at turning Europe into the "first climate-neutral continent" by 2050. It envisages stimulating green growth throughout the union, creating a clean circular economy, drastically reducing greenhouse gas emissions and pushing other countries to take more decisive action on climate change. The European Green Agreement covers all sectors of the economy, in particular transport, energy, agriculture, construction, and industries such as steel, cement, information and communication technologies, textile and chemical industries.
The EU sets an intermediate goal: to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50-55% from the 1990 level. By the summer of 2020, the Commission should present a plan of relevant activities.
