ArmInfo. The UN General Assembly on April 2, approved in New York a resolution entitled "Global solidarity in the fight against coronavirus disease."
In a consensus paper, UN states called for "intensifying international cooperation" to contain the pandemic, as well as resort to the exchange of information, scientific knowledge, and best practices. Separately, the document emphasized the special role of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the UN in combating the spread of the new type of virus.
The resolution, sponsored by Ghana, Indonesia, Liechtenstein, Norway, Singapore and Switzerland, reaffirms "the General Assembly's commitment to international cooperation and multilateralism and its strong support for the central role of the United Nations system in the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic>. She calls on US Secretary General Antonio Guterres to lead the mobilization and coordination of the global response to the pandemic <and its negative social, economic and financial impact on all societies>.
Note that, unlike the decisions of the UN Security Council, the resolutions of the General Assembly are not legally binding.
It is noteworthy that the UN states did not approve the Russian version of the resolution, which contained an indirect call for rejection international sanctions in a pandemic. The text mentioned, in particular, "the consent of states to cooperate with each other and with WHO", as well as "to abandon trade wars and apply unilateral sanctions bypassing the UN Security Council".
The European Union, Great Britain, the USA and Ukraine opposed the Russian project, co-sponsored by the Central African Republic, Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela.
It should be noted that, according to data as of April 3, 1 014 673 people were infected with the coronavirus, 52 973 died, 210 335 recovered. In Armenia, there are already a little less than 700 of them, 7 fatalities were recorded.
