ArmInfo.The so-called elections scheduled to be held today in Nagorno-Karabakh could lead to a new round of escalation of tension in the South Caucasus. Representative of the Iranian Foreign Ministry Abbas Musevi expressed this opinion, Anadol reports.
"Iran believes in the need to abandon any steps that complicate the settlement of problems between our country's two neighbors - Azerbaijan and Armenia," the diplomat said. According to Musevi, the so-called elections in Nagorno-Karabakh can lead to a new round of tension and exacerbate the contradictions in the region.
The representative of the Iranian Foreign Ministry emphasized that the conflict should be resolved peacefully on the basis of international law.
It should be noted that today in the Republic of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh Republic), nationwide elections of the president and deputies of the National Assembly started.
14 candidates are participating in the struggle for the post of President of Artsakh, 10 parties and 2 party blocs will fight for deputy mandates in the parliament of the republic. According to the Central Election Commission, 103,663 citizens of Artsakh have the right to vote, 280 polling stations have been created. Outside of the NKR, one of the polling stations will be created in Armenia.
