ArmInfo. Turkey has already turned to the US and NATO for help against a background of an impossibility of reaching an agreement with Moscow on the situation around Idlib. However, everything is not so simple as the Washington made it clear to Turks. Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia, Academician Ruben Safrastyan, expressed this opinion to ArmInfo.
"Accordingly, the further development of the situation will largely depend on the position of the United States. It seems to me that Russia will try to help the Bashar Assad government to take control of Idlib all the way through. At the same time, a compromise option is by no means excluded. A version of similar to the agreements reached on more eastern sections the Syrian-Turkish border. We are talking about creating a buffer zone in Syria controlled by the Turkish and Russian military, " the Turkologist said.
The intensification of Russian-Turkish contradictions observed in Syria, according to Safrastyan's forecasts, is quite capable of leading to geopolitical security risks for Armenia and Artsakh. In particular, he does not exclude the possibility of pushing Azerbaijan by Turkey to a more aggressive position on the Artsakh issue. Baku may try to increase the degree of tension in the Artsakh direction in order to divert Moscow's attention from Syria in the direction of the South Caucasus.
The academician emphasized that such a scenario, of course, is caused not only by Ankara's wishes, but also by the position of Baku. And the latter's willingness to follow the possible demands of Turkey to participate in its geopolitical games is a big question.
Moreover, the expert, against the background of the agreements signed recently during Erdogan's visit to Azerbaijan, sees certain negative trends. In particular, it is about increasing the supply of arms to Azerbaijan from Turkey. According to him, the latter testifies to Ankara's intentions to further tie Baku to itself and NATO arms. "Russia is the main supplier of weapons to Azerbaijan.
However, in the strategic plan, Turkey, of course, is interested in becoming the main supplier of weapons to Azerbaijan, the weapons which meeting NATO standards. Given the agreement signed recently in Baku, we can state that, at least at least in this matter the interests of Turkey and Azerbaijan are identical. Baku is trying to use the capabilities of Ankara in order to obtain weapons from the West, "Safrastyan concluded.
