ArmInfo. Armenia and Georgia signed a military cooperation plan for 2020. This was announced at a joint press conference in the negotiations between Minister of Defense of Georgia, Irakli Garibashvili and his Armenian counterpart David Tonoyan on February 27 in Yerevan.
"The plan provides for the holding of activities between the two countries in the defense sector: military education, social protection of military personnel, peacekeeping, skiing. An agreement was also reached to expand cooperation in a number of other areas, so far not including them in the bilateral cooperation plan. I would like to assure that Armenia and Georgia mutually respect each other's democratic and national value systems, decisions related to ensuring national security and seek to contribute to the idea of building a safer and more prosperous South Caucasus in the future, "Tonoyan noted.
He added that during the meeting the issues of the agenda of the Armenia-Georgia relations, regional and international security, as well as the development of defense cooperation between the two countries were discussed.
Tonoyan expressed gratitude to Garibashvili that in the South Caucasus region he after his appointment makes his first official visit to Armenia. Tonoyan stated that relations with Georgia are important for Armenia and should continue to develop in the spirit of good neighborliness based on mutual respect. In turn, Garibashvili assured that it is a great honor for him to be in Armenia today, a country with which Georgia has developed good neighborly relations over the centuries, based on mutual respect.
The Georgian minister emphasized that he had interesting and in-depth discussions with his Armenian counterpart on various issues of both the bilateral and multilateral agendas, and exchanged views on regional challenges.
"We agreed that there is no alternative to the development of our good neighborly relations, just as there is no alternative to a peaceful settlement of conflicts and ensuring peace and stability in the region. Vivid evidence of this is the dynamically developing cooperation between our countries at various levels," Garibashvili said, once again recalling the stable interaction of the two defense departments in ensuring regional stability and strengthening security.
