ArmInfo.During an extraordinary meeting of the parliament, head of the Bright Armenia faction Edmon Marukyan asked initiator of the meeting Vahagn Hovakimyan, why the My Step faction intends to submit a bill to terminate the powers of head of the Constitutional Court Hrayr Tovmasyan for a referendum.
"I don't understand why you are doing all this. By your decision, you actually initiate the electoral processes by sending millions of citizens to polling stations. You may well pass the law in the National Assembly by 88 MPs," Marukyan emphasized.
In response to the opposition's remark, Hovakimyan stated that the people have the right to resolve this issue independently through a referendum. "Everyone knows that in our country there is a very low level of trust in the Constitutional Court. And since this problem directly affects the Constitutional Court, they cannot be a body that exercises the right of the people," Hovakimyan emphasized.
It should be noted that today at an extraordinary meeting, the National Assembly is discussing a bill amending article 213 of the Constitution. The revised article states that the tenure of the Presidentand members of the Constitutional Court, appointed before the 7th chapter of the Constitution comes into force, is terminated.
