ArmInfo. It is very important for us to do everything possible to prevent torture in places of detention in Armenia. Armenian Ombudsman Arman Tatoyan stated this on January 17 during the discussions "New Legal Instruments of the Defender of Human Rights as a National Prevention Mechanism and Current Problems in Prisons".
He noted that the Ombudsman of Armenia actively cooperates with the European Union and the United Nations in this area. "We must fight this phenomenon. In the framework of this struggle, the ombudsman's office cooperates with the Armenian police, the Ministry of Justice, and international organizations," Tatoyan stated.
During the discussions, the criteria of the Ombudsman for the Prevention of Torture Prevention were also presented. The Ombudsman stated that this is very important, especially for those who are involved in the process of combating and preventing the prevention of torture.
In turn, head of the EU delegation to Armenia Andrea Viktorin noted that the Republic has recorded tremendous progress in preventing torture. "However, this does not mean that we will be easily satisfied. There are still a lot of things to do in this direction. But the most important thing in this matter is that political will is needed to solve this problem," Viktorin emphasized.
UN Resident Coordinator in Armenia Shombi Sharp stated that torture must be combated all available means. "Respect for human rights is very important. And the decrease in the number of tortures in places of deprivation of liberty in Armenia is certainly of great importance. There is a point of view that until you visit the country's prison, you will not know anything about it. I believe that visiting places of detention , as well as cooperation with authorized structures provide an opportunity to protect human rights in custody. For all human rights to be respected, cooperation with all actors in this field is necessary, "Sharp concluded.
During the event, a new electronic platform in Armenian and English was also presented, which provides the opportunity to automatically receive answers to 300 questions regarding the problems of persons deprived of their liberty.
