ArmInfo. Tensions in Iran-US relations are beginning to subside. On January 9, Secretary of the Security Council of Armenia Armen Grigoryan stated this in an interview with reporters after a meeting of the Armenian government.
According to him, the situation is moving towards de-escalation, and there are all the prerequisites for it to eventually stabilize. "The Armenian authorities are constantly monitoring the events in Iran and hope that in the near future there will be no new round of tension, but we must always be prepared for the worst," Grigoryan emphasized.
He noted that the economic security of the state is also well protected. During the Syrian and Iranian crises, plans were developed for the evacuation of the population and for food supply, opportunities for the use of alternative transport routes. During this period, the institutional capacities of Armenia were significantly strengthened. The Secretary of the Security Council, recalling the serious economic achievements of 2019, expressed confidence in their development this year.
To recall, on January 3, 2020 in Baghdad, as a result of a U.S. airstrike, Iranian Gen. Qassim Suleimani was killed. In the Guardian Corps of the Islamic Revolution, he led the al-Quds division, which was responsible for foreign operations, including in Syria. In response, Iran bombarded one of the US military bases in Iraq, after which US President Donald Trump announced his readiness to launch missile attacks on Iran. In turn, the Iraqi authorities condemned the actions of the United States on its territory and demanded the withdrawal of American troops from there.
