ArmInfo.Deputy Defense Minister of Armenia Gabriel Balayan critically assessed the legislative initiative by Hayk Sargsyan, MP from the "My Step" faction, according to which Armenian citizens will be able to serve in the army for only one month, paying 10 million AMD to the state.
In an interview with reporters, Balayan said that there is a negative opinion on this bill in the Ministry of Defense. In addition, he expressed doubt about the fact that in just one month of military service it is possible to obtain the necessary knowledge. According to him, this takes at least five months. Meanwhile, Balayan noted that this was purely his personal opinion, and did not exclude the possibility that when preparing the bill, the lawmaker considered international experience.
To note, according to the regulations adopted in 2005, persons who have reached 27 years of age can avoid criminal liability for evading military service by paying 3.6 million drams to the state (that is, 200 thousand drams for each missed military draft).
The new bill will allow people of draft age to use the financial compensation mechanism until they are 27 years old, paying the state 10 million drams and serving in the army for only a month. Earlier, Hayk Sargsyan noted that such mechanisms of accelerated military service are successfully operating in different countries of the world
