ArmInfo. Hayk Sargsyan, a MP from the "My Step" faction, came up with a legislative initiative, according to which Armenian citizens will be able to serve in the army for only one month, paying the state an amount of 10 million drams. At a meeting with reporters on November 29, the MP recalled that, according to the regulations adopted in 2005, persons over 27 years of age can avoid criminal liability for evading military service by paying the state 3.6 million drams (that is, 200 thousand drams for each missed military call).
At the same time, deviators from the army have to live outside of Armenia until they reach the age of 27.
The new bill will allow people of draft age to use the mechanism of financial compensation until they reach 27 years, having served in the army for only a month. According to Sargsyan, this period will be enough to gain drill and weapon skills.
According to him, such mechanisms of accelerated military service are successfully operating in different countries of the world. The MP noted that the initiative is aimed, also, at strengthening the army, since the amount of military contract soldiers will be increased with the funds raised. In addition, the bill will stop the outflow of male population from Armenia, since a certain percentage of young people leave the country precisely in order to avoid military service.
