ArmInfo. In global terms, there are many coincidences between the interests of Russia, Iran and Armenia, and, in general, these interests correspond to each other. In this light, on October 1, the presidents of Russia and Iran clearly had something to say to each other in Yerevan. A similar opinion was expressed by ArmInfo, the ex-Minister of Defense of Armenia, Lieutenant General Vagarshak Harutyunyan.
On October 1, a meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council was held in Yerevan with the participation of the leaders of 5 EAEU member states, as well as invited guests: Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Lun and Moldovan President Igor Dodon. Within the framework of the Yerevan summit, negotiations between the presidents of Iran and Russia, as well as negotiations between the Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Russian President Vladimir Putin, took place. "Tehran pursued, let's say, a fairly balanced policy aimed at ending the Karabakh war and preventing it in the future. In other words, Iran seeks to resolve the Karabakh conflict exclusively by peaceful means, which is fully in line with the interests of Armenia," he noted.
Harutyunyan noted the fact of Iran's confrontation with the West and Israel and the latter's use of Azerbaijan in order to weaken Iran through the involvement of Azerbaijanis living in the northern regions of Iran. In this light, Tehran, according to the general, is definitely not interested in any attempts to destabilize the situation around Karabakh, with the concomitant deployment of peacekeeping forces on the section of the Karabakh-Iranian border.
Given the strategic importance of this section for Iran, Tehran, according to Harutyunyan, is not interested in any change in the status quo around Karabakh, including military operations. The military noted that in this regard, the latest history of Armenia has already demonstrated that it is Iran that is an ally of Armenia in the Karabakh issue. Iran, according to the general, is an ally of Russia in Syria, in particular in joint actions against ISIS and Turkey.
