ArmInfo. The Syrian issue is sensitive to Armenia. Armenian Foreign Minister Zohrab Mnatsakanyan stated this at a press conference in Yerevan on September 6, referring to the sending of the Armenian humanitarian mission to Syria and the motives for this step.
"The fact that this issue is important is also evidenced by the sending of the Armenian humanitarian mission to the SAR. In this matter, we are guided by the principle of ensuring the safety of our compatriots in that country, "he said.
The head of the Armenian Foreign Ministry also did not agree with the statement that Yerevan took this step to please Russia, and now it is under pressure from the American side. According to Mnatsakanyan, Armenia in its actions is guided primarily by its own interests and does not seek to please anyone. "We have clearly formulated allied relations with Russia, and there is no need to display the qualities that you are talking about. In our actions, we are guided by our sovereign interests," he summed up.
To note, Armenian peacekeepers consisting of more than eighty people have been carrying out a humanitarian mission in Syria since February of this year. In June, the first rotation of forces took place in two stages. A few days earlier, information appeared in the Armenian media that the United States allegedly in an ultimatum demanded that the Armenian authorities withdraw the Armenian humanitarian mission from Syria, but this information was refuted at the level of both the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defense.
