ArmInfo.The statue to the famous Armenian politician Karen Demirchyan, who became a victim of a terrorist attack in the Armenian parliament on October 27, 1999, will be erected in front of the building of a Sports and Concert Complex named after him. The decision was made at a government meeting on August 8.
Presenting the project, the Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructures of Armenia Suren Papikyan noted that 3,281 million drams will be allocated from the Reserve Fund of the Government to solve the task. The Minister noted that this issue was discussed with members of the Demirchyan family, who agreed to the installation of the monument.
According to pre-estimates as Suren Papikyan emphasized, for the erection of a basalt statue with a height of 3.6 - 4 m. and a pedestal with a height of 1.4 - 1.6 m. In total, 54 million 237 thousand drams are needed. The author of the statue was the sculptor Sarkis Babayan. At the same time, the minister found it difficult to name a specific date for the erection of the statue, assuring that this work will be carried out as soon as possible. He also added that the project will be implemented jointly with the Yerevan Municipality in the framework of subvention programs.
In turn, Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan noted that the decision to erect the statue to Karen Demirchyan was made a long time ago, and initially it had to be erected on Mashtots Avenue, however, for various reasons, primarily because of the family's objections, the project was never implemented. As the head of the government noted, the selection of a new place for the statue by the Municipality, satisfied everyone. To recall, the national hero of Armenia Karen Demirchyan was the victim of a terrorist act on October 27, 1999.
