ArmInfo. Armenian Deputy Prime Minister Tigran Avinyan in New York at a meeting with UN Deputy Secretary General Fekitamoeloa Katoa 'Utoikamanu pointed out the need to resolve the issue of the closed border with Turkey.
According to the press service of the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, the interlocutors discussed the possibility of transporting goods for countries that are landlocked, the implementation of programs to ensure the accessibility of world markets and seaports.
Fekitamoeloa Katoa 'Utoikamanu noted the importance of active cooperation of countries involved in the study of the interim report of the "Program of Action for Landlocked Countries for 2014- 2024), planned in Vienna in the near future.
Tigran Avinyan drew the attention of the UN Deputy Secretary General to the geographical position of Armenia. According to him, the republic has no access to the sea, not only because of its geographical position, but because of the closure of borders with two of the 4 border countries. He invited the UN representative to take practical steps to resolve the issue of a closed border with Turkey. Fekitamoeloa Katoa 'Utoikamanu said she would study this issue.
The Armenian Deputy Prime Minister also informed about the programs of Turkey on the construction of reservoirs using the water resources of the Araks River. Avinyan pointed out that this activity has a negative impact not only on the water balance of the irrigated lands of the Araks River Basin, but also on the hydrological and bio balance of the region.
