ArmInfo. The number of crimes in 2018 increased significantly, having increased over the year by 11.2%. This was announced by the Prosecutor General Arthur Davtyan on May 8 in the National Assembly when discussing the report "On the activities of the prosecutor's office of the Republic of Armenia for 2018".
He noted that in 2018 22.551 crimes were registered. "In particular, the increase in crime was registered in two directions - small and flat burglaries. If we compare the figures for 2018 and a year ago, the growth was about 61%. Moreover, the level of detection of these crimes, on the contrary, decreased, which is a factor causing our serious concern, " theProsecutor General said.
Further, according to Davtyan, there are gross violations during the driving of motor vehicles. The growth of these crimes, according to the Prosecutor General, was 30%. Davtyan also noted that the most frightening is that as a result of the growth of these crimes, the number of fatal cases increased by 25%.
Davtyan stressed that the Prosecutor General's Office sent a package of legislative amendments to the Ministry of Justice in order to toughen the penalties for the most common crimes. "We believe that in this way we will be able to lower the figures," the prosecutor general said.
Another area, where crime rates have increased - almost 15 fold - corruption cases. Davtyan noted that in this regard, the reimbursement of funds to the state budget has also significantly increased. "The volume of reimbursement amounted to about 5 billion drams," the Prosecutor General stressed. In this context, Davtyan also touched upon the sensational bill on the confiscation of illegally acquired property. "Many people call this draft law an act of revolutionary justice, and noted that these are human rights violations. However, the working group that drafted the bill literally compares it with European precedents. Indeed, we propose to introduce sanctions not against our citizens, but against illegally acquired property ", - explained Davtyan.
However, according to the Prosecutor General, there have been positive developments. In particular, in 2018, the country had the lowest homicide rate for the last 38-40 years. "In 2018, there were 36 murders. We can note that over the last 38-40 years, this is the lowest figure. Indeed, in the 90s we have seen an increase in the number of murders, which continued until 1998. After that, this trend again declined, "said Davtyan. Also, according to the Prosecutor General, last year the fight against illegal logging was actively pursued. A total of 801 cases were recorded in 2018, compared with 2017, the increase in these crimes was 32%. "Compared with 2017, the initiation of criminal cases in this area has doubled. We managed to achieve high detection of these crimes in cooperation with the Ministry of Ecology, Agriculture and Police," Davtyan said.
Also, according to the Prosecutor General, the number of cases of serious bodily harm and robbery has significantly decreased.
Regarding the level of detection of crimes, the Prosecutor General stated that in 2018, 3,000 crimes that were committed in previous years were solved. "In general, it is about 16% of the total number of crimes recorded in 2018. Since these crimes were not committed in 2018, but were discovered during this period, they are recorded as crimes committed and disclosed in this segment time ", Davtyan said.
