According to a UN statement received by ArmInfo, the United Nations in Armenia is concerned about the recent increase in hate speech and threats of violence against LGBT activists. "Threats of violence or any form of discrimination against any group or individual are unacceptable. Constitution of the Republic of Armenia and international legal obligations of the Republic of Armenia, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and other UN conventions on human rights signed and ratified by Armenia prohibits discrimination. Therefore, we urge the Armenian authorities to investigate and prosecute cases of harassment and abuse of members of the LGBT community in accordance with the law, to ensure the physical safety of those who are persecuted, and to help create an environment for human dignity, free from hate speech. The principles of tolerance and the fight against discrimination entail respect for the rights of all people, including ethnic, religious and sexual minorities. Armenia made commendable commitments on this issue and made progress. The United Nations is ready to support the people of Armenia in realizing these commitments for the better life for all ", the UN statement reads.
