ArmInfo. The EU delegation in Armenia and the embassies of EU member states accredited in Armenia are deeply concerned about a number of recent events in the country, in particular, the sounding serious threats against minorities and human rights defenders, including death threats. This is stated in a joint statement of the EU delegation to the Republic of Armenia and the embassies of the EU countries.
The statement, in particular, emphasizes: <The statements that sow hatred, including death threats, addressed to Lilit Martirosyan, her partners and the entire LGBT community, are the most recent manifestation of these alarming trends and discrimination. Such manifestations are prohibited by the provisions of the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, to which Armenia has also joined, and that is reflected in the norms of the RA Constitution>.
In a statement, the EU calls on all those in Armenia who are committed to protecting fundamental human rights and freedoms to condemn such manifestations of hatred, and law enforcement agencies to take immediate steps to guarantee the physical security of RA citizens, as well as to investigate the facts of alleged hate crimes and identify persons involved in this.
To note, the speech from the tribune of the Armenian parliament of transgender Lilit Martirosyan caused a rapid public resonance in Armenia. The society was divided into two camps - those who do not see anything reprehensible in this speech, and those who consider it unacceptable. On the eve, in front of the Armenian parliament building, a protest was held in defense of family values, the organizers and participants of which sharply condemned the Martirosyan's speech in parliament.
