ArmInfo.A new holiday will appear in Armenia - Citizen's Day. At an extraordinary meeting on April 8, the National Assembly began discussions on amendments to the law "On Holidays and Memorable Dates."Presenting the document, RA Minister of Justice Artak Zeynalyan noted that the need for decision-making is due to unprecedented political events that occurred in Armenia in April-May last year.
The bill proposes to establish a new holiday, which will be celebrated on the last Saturday of April. But if May 1 falls on Saturday, Citizen's Day will be celebrated on the previous Sunday of April to exclude the possibility of celebrating Citizen's Day on April 24 - the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Armenian Genocide. As the Minister stressed, for decades the citizens of the country have fought for their constitutional right to form the Armenian authorities themselves. In April 2018, this was achieved. In unison, hundreds of thousands of citizens were able to carry out a non-violent "velvet" revolution, and for this reason the government considered it possible to add this phenomenon to the calendar of holiday dates without registering a specific day.In turn, members of parliament called on the government to specify the day, and not to engage in arithmetic calculations on whether Citizen's Day would coincide with the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Genocide or not. According to the deputies, one can also celebrate this day next Sunday after the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Genocide on April 24.In response, Artak Zeynalyan offered to submit his proposals, which will definitely be considered.
