ArmInfo. Armenian Defense Minister Davit Tonoyan held talks with the Director General of the Council of Europe on human rights and the rule of law Christos Giakoumopoulos.
The press service of the RA Ministry of Defense told ArmInfo that the meeting was aimed at discussing the legal and institutional mechanisms for the protection of human rights in the Armed Forces, as well as interaction with the CE in this direction.
Tonoyan spoke about various initiatives aimed at strengthening the protection of human rights in the RA Armed Forces. At the same time, the head of the Armenian Defense Ministry in the context of the Nagorno- Karabakh conflict drew the interlocutor's attention to the need to meet the requirements and norms of international humanitarian law, urging the international structures to be consistent in the implementation of the right to a fair and objective trial of citizens and military.
During the meeting, a number of other issues on the Armenia-CE cooperation agenda were discussed. To note, on February 27, an Azerbaijani court sentenced to 20 years imprisonment of Armenian citizen Karen Ghazaryan, who for unexplained reasons was on July 15, 2018 in the territory of Azerbaijan. The Azerbaijani side accused Ghazaryan, who had serious health problems, in an attempt to commit a terrorist act on the territory of the country.
