ArmInfo. The new authorities of Armenia recorded that the former regime, which rigged the election results, completely overthrew the constitutional order, seized state power and turned it into a terrorist machine used against the Armenian people.
This is stated in the statement of the Sasna Tsrer party, received by ArmInfo. The statement also notes: "The new authorities revealed that on March 1, 2008, the constitutional order was overthrown, in fact, there was a state terror." According to the statement, on March 1, the country plunged "into the darkness of dictatorship."
"For 10 years, citizens fought, were arrested, persecuted in order to overcome this darkness. After the four- day April war, it became obvious that treason was also added to state terror, as the regime was trying by war to transfer the liberated territories to the enemy upon agreement," the statement reads.
According to the authors of the statement, the 2016 uprising of the Sasna Tsrer Group, despite partial success, slowed down this process and also became a kind of response to the events of March 1, 2008. "This led to a deep crisis in the government system and to certain changes. And already in the new conditions in May 2018, Serzh Sargsyan, having obeyed the will of the people, was forced to leave," the statement stresses. But, according to representatives of the Sasna Tsrer party, the situation will finally change only when the National Security Service and police officers apologize to the people for their actions, and those responsible for the events of March 1 will suffer a well-deserved punishment. "The fact that Robert Kocharyan and several high-ranking officials are being held accountable is not enough. It is not clear why Serzh Sargsyan is still at large today?" The authors of the statement wonder.
They also complain about the ongoing criminal proceedings against members of the Sasna Tsrer party on a fabricated case. "The authorities, who enjoy the trust of the people, must and are obliged to restore justice through transitional justice. We express our deep condolences to the relatives of the victims of March 1, 2008 and to all our people," representatives of the Sasna Tsrer party conclude.
To note, as a result of clashes at opposition rallies that followed the 2008 presidential elections in Armenia, at which Serzh Sargsyan won de jure, 10 people were killed on March 1. The investigation of the case is still ongoing. Within the framework of the case, the second President of Armenia, Robert Kocharyan, and a number of high-ranking officials of that time are being charged with overthrowing the constitutional system. To recall, the current Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan was an active supporter of Levon Ter- Petrosyan. After the events of March 1, 2008, Pashinyan was convicted on charges of organizing mass riots for 7 years, and, after serving 2 years, was released.
