Armenian human rights defender Aram Tatoyan in Strasbourg met with Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Duney Miyatovich, with Head Directorate for Human Rights and Rule of Law Christos Dzhiakoumopolis, as well as with Snezhana Samardzhich-Markovich, Director General for Democracy of the Council of Europe.
According to the press service of the ombudsman, during the visit, Tatoyan also held discussions with other representatives of the Council of Europe - the Committee for the Prevention of Corruption, the Department for the Execution of ECHR Decisions and others. During the meetings, issues of the prevention of torture and other forms of ill-treatment in Armenia, issues related to the protection of the rights of people with disabilities, the rights of women and children were discussed. Aram Tatoyan presented the problems that he fixed in these areas and the possibilities for solving them. In particular, he noted that a mechanism should be introduced for the gradual release of persons deprived of their liberty, as well as to develop a system of parole, a system of parole should be developed. The situation in psychiatric organizations, public services and the development of alternative treatment methods were discussed.
The parties also discussed the problems faced by women because of their stereotypes, the wrong perception of their role in society and the state.The meeting also noted the recent practice of an ombudsman, a third party at the European Court of Human Rights, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, which represents a special position regarding the decisions of the ECHR, etc.The officials of the Council of Europe stressed the high level of cooperation with the human rights defender from Armenia, the joint work aimed at the continuous improvement of the human rights protection system in Armenia.At the end of the meeting, the parties agreed on further work and additional commitments.
