ArmInfo. We believe that by moving to a semi-presidential system of government, Armenia will take a huge step back. Head of the Bright Armenia faction Edmon Marukyan said this on February 18 during a briefing in parliament, commenting on the statements of the Armenian National Congress that a referendum should be held in the country during the year to return to semi- presidential government.
The MP stated that for all the past time, Armenia had a presidential, semi-presidential and parliamentary system of government. "We recently switched to a new format in the form of a parliamentary system of government. And I think that now we need to move forward and improve our achievements in the establishment of a parliamentary system of government, and not move back," the MP stressed.
Marukyan also noted that it is necessary to abandon the "superpremier" system and become a fully parliamentary country.
In turn, Deputy Speaker of the Armenian Parliament Lena Nazaryan stated that this issue has not yet been discussed in the "My Step" faction. She stressed that the government's agenda certainly includes constitutional reforms, but there have not yet been discussions that would concern the government system. "However, I would like to note that we will discuss this issue in the near future. As for my personal position on this issue, I would not like to voice it, as we will discuss this issue with the whole faction, and personal opinion will not play a special role in this matter, "Nazaryan stressed. In turn, the former Deputy Speaker of the Parliament Mikayel Melkumyan briefly emphasized that this issue was not discussed in the Prosperous Armenia faction.
