ArmInfo.Russia and Turkey were able to reach a consensus on the Syrian issue: Ankara will tolerate the power of Bashar Assad as head of Syria. director of the Institute of Oriental Studies, ull member of the Armenian National Academy of Sciences, and Turkologist, professor Ruben Safrastyan said this at a press conference in Yerevan on January 25.
He noted that Turkey had recently made a statement that it did not have any territorial claims against Syria, however, shortly before that, Ankara had announced its intention to carry out the third invasion on the northern border in Syria. According to the expert, this also shows that a consensus has emerged between the parties on some issues on the Syrian settlement. "In general, after the statement of the US President Donald Trump that the American troops will be withdrawn from the territory of Syria, negotiations on this issue intensified between Russia and Turkey. And at this stage Ankara will not oppose the power of Asad," Safrastyan stressed. The expert noted that, despite the fact that in a number of issues the interests of Russia and Turkey in Syria do not coincide, at the moment the parties have been able to agree on key issues.
