ArmInfo.Armenian Prosecutor General Arthur Davtyan, who is on a working visit to Iran, met with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Jafar Montazeri.
As the press service of the Prosecutor General's Office told ArmInfo, Montazeri noted that the Armenian- Iranian relations based on mutual trust and centuries-old friendship make it possible, based on the existing regulatory framework, to discuss prospects for further deepening interaction between the prosecutor's offices of the two countries, and also to develop mechanisms and means of solving work issues in the field of mutual legal assistance in the fight against crime.
In his turn, Davtyan expressed his conviction that this meeting would be the beginning of a new stage in cooperation between the two departments, and would contribute to the further development and strengthening of interaction between the law enforcement structures of the two countries.
The meeting discussed both the prospects for interaction with the prosecutor's offices of neighboring countries, as well as concrete steps to improve the practice of mutual legal assistance.
The Prosecutor Generals of Armenia and Iran discussed the issue of the possible optimization of the deadlines for submitting applications for legal assistance in criminal matters. It was noted that after their meeting in St. Petersburg in this direction positive trends were recorded, but there is a need to accelerate the process.
Following the meeting, the parties signed a cooperation agreement for 2019-2020 between the prosecutor's offices of Armenia and Iran, which provides for holding a number of events in Yerevan and Tehran. They relate to practical issues of cooperation in the field of extradition and legal assistance in criminal cases initiated on the facts of illegal import of narcotic drugs and illegal drug trafficking, as well as the identification, seizure, confiscation and return of assets as a result of criminal offenses and the exchange of experience. "I am convinced that as a result of the implementation of our cooperation program, the prosecutors of our states, in addition to sharing practical and theoretical knowledge with each other, will be able to develop further cooperation between the two prosecutor's offices through personal contacts", Davtyan said, concluding by inviting his Iranian counterpart to Armenia.
