ArmInfo. In the Yerevan Zoo Caucasian brown bears bit to death their conspecific female.
According to the press service of the zoo, received by ArmInfo, the incident occurred as a result of intraspecific struggle. "It may occur in the wild nature, and in some cases in captivity, depending on the current internal social hierarchy, animal behavior, on the eve of the breeding season or other biological factors. Despite the fact that such a struggle is inherent in large predators, we note that for many years the brown bears kept in the zoo attacked the female, who was near them for 6 months, as a result, the weak animal died.
Given the suddenness and rapid development of the situation, it was not possible to intervene in a timely manner in the struggle and prevent the death of the animal.
"This is not the only case in zoos where predatory animals are kept. The zoo management is conducting an examination in connection with the incident," the zoo press service said, adding that today there are 17 Trans-Caucasian brown bears living in the park.
