ArmInfo. Families of 4500 missing people as a result of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict still hope of finding their relatives alive. Today marks the International Day of Missing People.
As the press service of the International Committee of the Red Cross informs, even 24 years after the establishment of the ceasefire in the zone of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, thousands of families of missing people continue to wait for news from their relatives.
"The ICRC, as a neutral mediator, continues to assist families in finding out any information about these people. As a result of the Karabakh conflict, more than 4,500 people have gone missing. According to the ICRC, more than 400 of them are registered in Armenia, the rest in Nagorno-Karabakh and Azerbaijan. Starting from 2014 the ICRC collects biological samples from relatives of missing people in order to increase the likelihood of identification of remains in the future in the process of exhumation of identified graves. Moreover, the Organization assists the families of the gone missing, for example, helping them to be economically more sustainable, focused on addressing legal or health issues, "the ICRC statement reads.
The International Day of the Missing People is held every year on 30 August.
