ArmInfo. The "Armenian Renaissance" Diaspora organization welcomes the criminal prosecution of Armenian President Robert Kocharyan and the process of charging those guilty of overthrowing the constitutional order in connection with the events of March 1, 2008.
According to the statement of the organization, received by ArmInfo, the policy of protecting the rights, ensuring the supremacy of the Constitution and the priority of democracy proclaimed by the new Armenian authorities is the greatest achievement of the "velvet revolution" in Armenia. "We express hope that the first and the third presidents will also face justice, as they had appropriated power by electoral falsifications, as well as everyone who helped them," the statement reads. Restoration of justice, they believe, should also concern those who even had any positive contribution - society should be ready for the "de-glorification" of heroes, if law and justice demand it. The authors of the statement note that the Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, who enjoys the confidence of the population and the diaspora, is given a historic opportunity to eradicate the practice of establishing an illegitimate authority in Armenia.
To recall, on July 28 the first instance court of Shengavit district of Yerevan granted the request of the Special Investigation Service of Armenia on choosing arrest as a measure of restraint against the second President Robert Kocharyan for a period of 2 months for the overthrow of the constitutional order in the framework of the criminal case on March 1, 2008. Today, the Court of Appeal will consider the petition of the lawyers to change the measure of restraint against Kocharyan. As it was announced on July 29, Robert Kocharyan does not plead guilty and the essence of the charge is not clear for the defense. To note, the Republican Party of Armenia intends to raise the issue of Kocharyan's arrest in international platforms.
