ArmInfo.Speaker of the Knesset, Julius Edelstein, withdrew the issue of recognition of the Armenian Genocide.
According to the media, referring to the Spokesperson's spokesman, the Knesset was to vote for this resolution on May 29.
"Edelstein eliminated this issue in order to avoid embarrassment, since it was not clear whether the majority would support this decision," the spokesman said.
It is noteworthy that Edelstein himself for many years, including last week, repeatedly stated that he supports the recognition of the Armenian Genocide.
At the same time, the leader of the Meretz party, Tamar Zandberg, who made a proposal to the Knesset, accused Edelstein of putting politics above morality. "The Knesset must fulfill its promise, this is a matter of historical justice," Meretz leader said.
Discussions in the Knesset were initiated against the backdrop of the deterioration of relations between Turkey and Israel. The proposal was submitted to the Parliament on May 16 this year. Several Israeli ministers and parliamentarians urged to recognize the Armenian Genocide against the backdrop of insults and critical statements on the part of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. It is noteworthy that this step was negatively perceived in society and was regarded as a step that may turn into a genocide issue obscene political football.
