ArmInfo. In the course of the events that took place and are taking place in Armenia, I did things that are not usually expected of a president. Armenian President Armen Sarkissian stated in an interview with the British newspaper The Independent.
As one of the scientists behind the Tetris computer game, the president, despite the fact that he is a scientist, had little to predict about the latest developments. "Humans are not machines," said Sarkissian,.
"It was quite hard work bringing the sides together," says Mr Sarkissian. "I did things that are not usually expected of a president, such as going into the crowds. But you couldn't do your job by simply sitting in an office."
Armen Sarkissian, at the invitation of Nikol Pashinyan, came to a rally on the Republic Square where he had a talk with the leader of the opposition movement.
Later, during these days, various meetings and negotiations were organized with the mediation of Sarkissian.
Speaking of the detention of Pashinyan and his supporters, Sarkissian admitted that he did not welcome this decision, saying that after arresting the opposition he invited Serzh Sargsyan to a meeting. "The secrets of the meeting remain secret, but you can judge for yourself the results," he said.
Sarkissian also assured that he is ready to continue to play a constructive role if such a need arises. "I'm ready to stand between the policeman and the protesters, if this becomes necessary," he said.
Sarkissian stressed that the new government of Armenia is awaiting great trials. "Nikol Pashinyan showed himself to be a talented politician sensitive to public opinion, but to lead the government is completely different, he will have to answer all the questions he himself asked the government before and people should understand that not everything was before, was dark, and not everything will be bright tomorrow," the president concluded.
