ArmInfo. The European Parliament held discussions on the Karabakh issue with the participation of European deputies, experts and representatives of the Bureau Hay- Dat.
During the event, the deputies of the European Parliament Michel Rivas and Lars Adaktson delivered speeches. They touched upon the subject of the Sumgayit and Baku pogroms. The deputies also stressed the need to step up the mediation mission of the OSCE Minsk Group.
Lars Adaktson, in particular, stressed the need for European deputies to visit Artsakh in order to familiarize themselves with the situation on the ground. The expert Dr. Alfred de Zayas stressed that international normative acts provide an opportunity for self- determination of Artsakh, and expert Paul Williams noted that recently the principle of the right of peoples to self-determination began to dominate international law. According to him, over the past 20 years, 25 new states have been formed, and Artsakh has already gone a long way of establishing statehood.
In his turn, Deputy Foreign Minister of Artsakh Armine Aleksanyan called on the EU to intensify efforts towards the settlement of the Karabakh conflict. She also stressed that Baku should understand that without the participation of Stepanakert in the negotiations the problem will not be resolved. -nu- Today in the European Parliament another similar event will be held, dedicated to the Karabakh problem.
