ArmInfo. NATO will assist Armenia in the dismantlement of obsolete military equipment. The agreement with the Alliance, signed on July 14, 2017 in Luxembourg and Brussels, was ratified at a meeting of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia on December 6.
According to First Deputy Defense Minister Artak Zakaryan, within the framework of the agreement Armenia will destroy 140 units of military equipment and 21 units of infantry fighting vehicles, which lost their combat significance. This equipment will be dismantled and sold in the form of metal. The money will be spent on demining on the territories of Azerbaijan bordering on Azerbaijan and improvement of methods for raising awareness of local residents. After the dismantlement of obsolete military equipment, Armenia will be able to obtain a similar amount of new equipment. To implement the project, the German government will allocate about 1.5 million euros. In order to implement the program in the next two months, Armenia and NATO will create a Trust Fund, which will be subject to tax and customs privileges, as well as inviolability of property.
The interaction between Armenia and NATO is currently being built in accordance with the Armenia- NATO Individual Partnership Action Plan (IPAP), which was signed in December 2005. Armenia's participation in the program involves holding periodic consultations with NATO on regional security, developing a security strategy, developing a military doctrine for Armenia, improving the process of defense and budget planning, and other issues. Armenia also participates in peacekeeping missions of the alliance in Kosovo and Afghanistan.
