ArmInfo. Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan visited the UN Yerevan office on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of cooperation.
As the Presidential press service told ArmInfo, Sargsyan congratulated the head of the UN office in Armenia Bradley Busetto and the staff of the office on this important event. The President of Armenia highly appreciated the development programs implemented in the republic through the UN Office in Yerevan, which, he said, were purposeful and varied - from promoting democratic institutions to assisting the average business.
During the meeting with Busetto Sargsyan expressed hope that effective cooperation of Armenia with the UN will be strengthened and deepened from year to year. The Armenian leader reaffirmed Armenia's commitment to the core values laid down in the UN foundation. "Busetto also plays a significant role in the useful and effective work of the Yerevan office of the United Nations. In Armenia, people believe the office, with the coordination of which programs are implemented with high professionalism and responsibility. The UN is undoubtedly primarily a United Nations organization consolidated around common goals, and I want to express my gratitude to thousands of people who carry out an important mission under its auspices," the Armenian leader said.
Busetto noted that the office over the years has made every effort to ensure that the UN in Armenia becomes a neutral platform for the international community and joint work in Armenia. "The UN in Armenia, through financial donors from the EU, Russia, the United States and other countries, is implementing many programs, during which we tried to focus our attention on the strategic problems of the Armenian government, for example: upgrading border checkpoints, strengthening democratic institutions We also expect the implementation of new programs, for example, the modernization of the Meghri checkpoint, the discussion with the Ministry of Emergencies of the issue of cleaning the storage facilities of the Nairit chemical plant from hazardous substances and successful programs are being implemented in the border communities of Tavush region, and today we are exploring the possibility of expanding them to include the border communities of Gegharkunik and Syunik, and of course we must not forget about the work we are doing jointly with Armenia for Armenian refugees from Syria. I would like to express my gratitude to Armenia for promoting international peace and stability, in particular, for an important and active role in the UN peacekeeping missions. I would like to single out the peacekeeping contingents of Armenia participating in the UN missions in Mali, Lebanon and other countries," the UN coordinator concluded.
