ArmInfo.Azerbaijan can become part of EEU, either in case of Armenia's agreement or its withdrawal from this integration association. The head of the Center for Post- Soviet Studies of the IMEMO RAS Alexander Krylov expressed his opinion to ArmInfo.
Speaking at the 6th Russian-Armenian interregional forum on October 6, Sergei Glazyev, the adviser to the Russian president on issues of regional economic integration, conditioned Russia's decision to take Azerbaijan's position in the EEU by the position of Armenia. In particular, he stressed that the decision on the admission of new members is made on a consensus basis and Yerevan can fully use the right of veto.
"Obviously, both, at least in the foreseeable future, is possible only theoretically." Yes, Azerbaijan has close economic ties with the majority of the EEU members, but considering that all decisions in the EEU are taken consensually, it is clear that counting it is unrealistic to get Armenia's consent before normalizing its relations with Azerbaijan, "he said.
In this regard, in the near future, Krylov estimates the statements about the possible entry of Azerbaijan into the EEA as extremely declarative and devoid of chances for practical implementation. According to his estimates, the Eurasian plot is being inflated in Baku with the aim of making the Armenian society nervous.
At the same time, Krylov assesses the plot of Russia's pressure on Armenia for the reception of Azerbaijan as fantastic, given that Baku does not aspire to it at all, while presenting the case as if Moscow "sleeps right and sees Azerbaijan in the EEU." The analyst is convinced that it is clearly premature to talk about a real turn of Baku towards the EEU.
The topic of Azerbaijan's accession to the EEU is emerging in expert and political circles and the media of Armenia and Azerbaijan periodically. In 2015, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov did not rule out such a possibility. To which his Armenian colleague Edward Nalbandyan stated that this issue is not discussed at the EEU, recalling that such decisions should be taken by consensus.
