On October 1, 2017, a referendum on independence was held in Catalonia. More than 2 million people took part in the voting, 90% of which voted for the creation of an independent state. The Spanish central authorities were against the referendum and tried to ban it. As a result of clashes between police and citizens, more than 800 people were injured.
