ArmInfo.In order to secure one of the most complicated sections of the Mtskheta-Stepantsminda-Lars motorway leading to Russia, (the Military-Georgian road), a new tunnel has been started in Georgia.
According to the Department of Motorways of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia, the construction takes place at the intersection of the Daryal canyon with the Devdorak gorge. It is planned to build a 1.7-kilometer tunnel 8.5 meters wide adjacent to its access portals, which will make it possible to secure the Military-Georgian road, where every year there are problems with the descent of avalanches.
The construction works are carried out by the Georgian company Peri, which won in the international tender, the cost of the project financed from the state budget of Georgia, about 20 million. The project implementation period is 12 months.
The Georgian Military Road is currently the only overland route linking Georgia and Armenia to Russia. Accordingly, the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia notes, the construction of the Devdorak tunnel, a stable and safe road is necessary to preserve the transit function of Georgia.
