ArmInfoFormer US Ambassador to Azerbaijan, former OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chair Matthew Bryza is convinced that military operations in the zone of the Nagorno- Karabakh conflict can begin if the government of Azerbaijan or Armenia makes a decision in this regard.
However, he believes that neither Azerbaijan nor Armenia is interested in such an operation. "It may be that a country will resort to such provocation not from the South Caucasus. I do not mean the USA. The presence of heavy equipment on the line of contact can lead to such serious clashes as the April fights. But in the end it did not develop into a war. Because nobody is interested in war," Bryza said, APA reports.
At the same time, he is convinced that the Karabakh conflict is the main obstacle to the economic development and security of the region. "These are the Madrid principles, which must be followed to the end. However, without the personal contribution of the presidents of the United States and Russia, this is impossible. When I was the co-chairman, there was such a moment that we were able to move forward. Because our President George Bush and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev paid attention and contributed to this issue. In addition, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov creatively approached this issue. This stimulated the need for creative thinking. Now there is no policy, either only in connection with the South Caucasus, but in general, in connection with world affairs," the former US ambassador said.
At the same time, he added that while the US and Russia will not contribute to the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, there will be no progress in resolving it.
