Alexander Iskandaryan: April actions repetition is hardly probable in  near future

ArmInfo.There is no strategy on Karabakh conflict settlement for the current moment, there are only attempts to prevent military actions. The situation of not war not  peace will continue in the near future, Alexander Iskandaryan, Caucasus Institute director, political expert expressed such an opinion during the press conference. 

The expert is sure that now there is no way to resolve the conflict  through the Madrid principles. This is due, in the first place, to  the unstable domestic political situation in Azerbaijan, the struggle  of elites, and the complexity of the economic situation. At the same  time, the expert supposed that the repetition of the April actions of  the previous year in the near future is hardly probable, since  Azerbaijan lacks military capabilities. "However, it is possible that  after a while, Baku will again try to restart combat actions in  Nagorno-Karabakh, but the balance of power over the previous  year  has significantly changed in favor of the NKR," Iskandaryan stressed,  He also noted that the escalation, started during recent years at the  boundary can be characterized as average by its power. According to  Iskandaryan, conflict escalation in February 2017 was much more  important. 

The expert also supposed that the escalation at the conflict zone in  a certain extent is  related to the appointment  to the post  of   Vice-President Azerbaijani First Lady Mehriban Alieva. However, her  appointment is, to a large extent, caused by the struggle of elites  within the country and desire to strengthen the position of the  ruling clan.
