ArmInfo.There is a link between the assassination of Russian Ambassador to Turkey and the country's authorities, Director of Oriental Studies Institute under Armenian National Academy of Science Ruben Safrastyan stated at the today's press conference in Yerevan.
According to him assassination of the Russian Ambassador in Ankara harmed seriously image of the Turkish authorities besides this is a vivid evidence that Turkish elite is disunited. "Ambassador's assassination is related to the service of the national security of Turkey and elite. This demonstrated that country's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan did not manage to neutralize the participants of the July revolt and showed that part of the elite is dissatisfied with the political line of the country's leadership", the Orientalist is sure.
Safrasyan stated that Turkey has suffered serious losses in the North of Syria and in order not to loose its influence in the Syrian crisis it started tactical cooperation with Russia and Iran. He recalled that Turkey had serious plans to conquer Aleppo but they failed as the governmental army managed to force rebels out of the city and regain control over Western part of the city. Ankara now tries not to allow uniting of the two parts of Kurdish population in the North of Syria. "In geopolitical terms Turkey's interests on the one hand and Russia and Iran's on the other completely differ and Karlov's assassination testifies to this, who as it is known was participating in the negotiations on Syria. Thus, radical Jihadists demonstrated their discontent with Erdogan's policy", Safrastyan summarized.
To note, Russian Ambassador to Turkey Andrey Karlov was shot dead in the art gallery in Ankara on Monday. He died of 11 fatal bullet wounds. The Russian Foreign Ministry qualified this as a terror attack. According to the preliminary information, the killer was Mevlut Mert Altintas born in in 1994, according to data he had graduated from a police college in Izmir. Russia and Turkey agreed to arrange joint investigation, an operative group comprising 18 officers has already left for Turkey.
