ArmInfo. The project on Strengthening the application of European human rights standards in the armed forces in Armenia launched in Armenia was presented in Yerevan on November 21.
In his greeting speech Christos Giakoumopolous, the Director of Human Rights of the Council of Europe, stated that the major part of the project will be funded by the Government of Great Britain. He also mentioned, that it is important for all the citizens admitting the military service, to have an access to all the basic human rights. According to him, this Project will embrace not only those who serve at the army, but also those who serves at other power entities of the country, and it the participation of civil society to this project is very important as well. The Director of Human Rights Committee stated he is confident that this project will be successfully implemented in Armenia.
In his turn, Armenian Defense Minister noted that the project is systematic, which is aimed at human rights protection at the armed forces, and is not limited by raising public awareness or analyzing separate situations. " Securing human rights in such closed entity like army is very important. It is important for our citizens to know that sending their sons to the army they should now that they will have all the basic human rights," Defense Minister stated.
At the same time he mentioned the importance of the "Strengthening th application of European human rights standards in the armed forces in Armenia" in the context of common improvement of human rights in Armenia. . Meanwhile, the Ambassador of Great Britain to Armenia Judith Farnworth mentioned that Brisitsh Government decided to provide a support within the implementation of this project, because one of the priorities of United Kingdom is the development of Armenia as an independent country. She also stated that, having a number of meetings in Armenian Defense Ministry, hse understood that the issue of young people safety in the army is in the focus of high ranked officials. Ambassador stated also she is confident that this project, being implemented together with the European Council, wil succeed and will have essential results
Arthur Davtyan, the Prosecutor General of Armenia, stated that the human rights is an exclusive value and their implementation is of a great importance. "The improvement of human rights in the armed forces is one of our priorities. We are ready to provide any support to each project, implemented in this field."
The purpose of the Project on Strengthening th application of European human rights standards in the armed forces in Armenia is the improvement of the human rights support in Armenian Military Forces. The project is implemented by the Ministry of Defense under funding of British Government.
