ArmInfo. The consensus on the amendments to the Electoral Code recently reached between the parliamentary opposition and the authorities is a historic event, Armenian Parliament Vice Speaker Eduard Sharmazanov told reporters after the meeting of the Executive Body of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA).
This demonstrates the RPA's resoluteness to conduct the parliamentary elections in 2017 in compliance with democratic standards. "We have done everything possible for the forthcoming elections to satisfy the opposition at the level of the Electoral Code at least," he said.
On September 13, representatives of the authorities and the opposition factions signed a new agreement on creating additional mechanisms for raising public confidence in elections. The new document envisages publication of the lists of the citizens who went to the polls. The document also ensures online broadcasting from the polling stations during elections. For implementing the additional mechanisms of control over the electoral processes 9 mln USD was needed. The amount has been raised due to the EU, the USA and donor organizations' efforts. The EU welcomes the agreement on election reform signed between the government and opposition of Armenia.
