ArmInfo. Something was inherently wrong with the use of the military base in Iran by the Russian Aerospace Forces, says Arman Melikyan, the former foreign minister of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic, in an interview with ArmInfo.
"I can imagine how hard it was for Tehran to adopt a decision to provide Russia with an opportunity to target ISIS infrastructures from the Hamadan airbase. I can remember no such precedent. The more so as, in the given case, Iran's leaders sanctioned air strikes and bombing of the Sunni Muslims by the Christian Russia," Melikyan said.
He is sure that it took a long time for Iran to adopt such decision, given that Tehran does not like spontaneous decisions. Meantime, to halt the cooperation, Tehran needed a day, no more. The political analyst says he has got an impression that the sides had very tough arrangements to observe and the Russian military or politicians have violated them.
In his words, the Russian Aerospace Forces have either targeted something wrong or in the wrong time or the Russian agitprop made public something that was to be hushed up.
At the same time, Melikyan thinks the Moscow-Baku-Tehran axis is not connected directly with that failure in the Russian-Iranian military cooperation. Melikyan believes that both Russia and Iran need to bring Azerbaijan out of the area of Turkey's total military-political influence and this is what makes them closer.
"Another matter that without Iran's support, Russia is unable to settle this task on its own. Actually, for the first time during the last two centuries Russia had to ask for Iran's support to promote its interests in the South Caucasus. This means that Iran has got a new role and new rights in our region from the consent and with the support of Russia," the political analyst says.
