The Armenian National Security Service (NSS) has released a statement on seizure of the building of Erebuni Police Department in Yerevan by a group of Zhirayr Sefilyan’s supporters. To note, leader of the New Armenia movement Zhirayr Sefilyan was arrested in June. The statement says that the people who have seized the building disseminate reports through the social networks, noting that they started an armed revolt and seized a number of state buildings. This information has absolutely nothing to do with the reality, the NSS says, adding that the state structures are operating normally and ensure public order and state security in the country. Negotiations are being held with those who have seized the police building to avoid armed clashes that may cause human losses. The NSS assures that any illegal actions will be suppressed and the culprits will be punished in accordance with the law.
By unspecified data, the clashes between the oppositionists and the police wounded three employees of law-enforcement agencies. They were rushed to Erebuni Medical Center. No people were killed. The Erebuni district of Yerevan is blocked by the law-enforcers. The oppositionists have taken one of the Armenian Police senior officials hostage, and they demand releasing Zhirayr Sefilyan.
On June 20, 2016, Zhirayr Sefilyan was detained on suspicion of organizing a criminal group. 8 persons face charges of acquisition and keeping of weapons and ammunition. 6 have been arrested and 1 is wanted. According to the Special Investigative Service of Armenia, Sefilyan and his supporters were planning to seize buildings of state importance in early April. Two-month arrest has been chosen as a measure of restraint against Sefilyan, however, his supporters think the case is a frame-up and the arrest is political persecution for his political views, activities and statements about the territorial losses the Armenian side suffered during the April war.
