Baku's shady undertaking aims to draw Washington's attention, Dr. Alexander Tsinker, Head of the Institute on Eastern Europe and CIS, Israel, has told ArmInfo.
The expert notes that though this shady undertaking was prepared beforehand, he hopes that it will not develop into large-scale military operations.
"Ilham Aliyev gave the go-ahead to the operation following his meeting with the U.S. leadership. It is not known what they discussed there. Anyway, the developments are the result of his meetings in Washington," Dr.Tsinker says, noting that Baku wanted to draw attention to the problem.
If the ongoing developments are the echo of the geopolitical game in the Greater Middle East region, Baku's steps can be considered as a condition of the bargain, in which Azerbaijani leadership might be involved by a promise to reduce the pressure on its anti-democratic regime, Dr. Tsinker says.
In any case, the Israeli expert hopes that the Karabakh problem settlement will shortly return from the military level to the political one.
On April 1 night, the Azerbaijani army attacked the positions of the NKR Defense Army along the entire line of contact, using artillery, armored vehicles and air force. The adversary targeted also the populated areas and civil facilities. Fierce battles are still going on along the line of contact. The Armenian Air Defense Forces took retaliatory measures, shooting down 2 Azerbaijani military helicopters, 2 drones, and destroying 3 battle tanks. The adversary has suffered dozens of human losses.
